Kurgi Observation Tower

Emerge Out of the Fields.

Latvia

Located in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, the only specially protected natural habitat in Latvia, Kurgi Farm is nestled in amongst a valuable landscape and a collection of significant cultural structures. It is the perfect location to admire an existing landscape, support an endangered Latvian horse breed, and create another valuable Latvian landmark rooted in its surroundings, heritage, and purpose.

Kurgi Tower emerges out of the fields, rich forests, and rural forms, reaching towards the sky offering unique perspectives of the biosphere and farm from both the ground and the sky.

The tower originates from three rural forms, an entry portal and two horse stables, to provide an arrival sequence for the observation tower and to enhance the therapeutic experiences of guests with the Latvian Ardennes. The three forms, wrapped with locally harvested wood, pay an homage to the early Latvian wood architecture which was very much of the local forests and the culture of self-reliance.

The forms join together forming a hexagon as one rises through the tower, suggesting a journey towards the sun. Throughout the climb, guests are reminded of significant views and structures beyond, with view portals and wayfinding to better experience your location or position within the larger landscape. The journey to the top offers a bevy of different perspectives, allowing guests a unique opportunity to fully immerse themselves in their surroundings. As you near the top observation deck, the tower begins to open like a flower, revealing uninterrupted 360 degree views of Kurgi Farm and the North Latvian Biosphere Reserve. It is a moment to look beyond, reflect on the journey, and enjoy your surroundings.
